When George Osborne spoke of the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ a few years back, he probably didn’t have food and drink on his mind. And yet, growth in the UK’s bar and restaurant scene is being led by the UK’s northern cities, with analysis by trade show Northern Restaurant & Bar and CGA showing that the number of city centre bars and restaurants in Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds has increased by more than 20% over the past five years, a percentage double that of London during the same period.

“We’re delighted but not surprised by the data, we have seen the changes first hand – new restaurants and bars are opening almost every day,” says Thom Hetherington, CEO of Northern Restaurant & Bar exhibition. “Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds are building top class food and drink scenes, and that’s great news for diners. Despite this being a challenging time for hospitality businesses, growth is being largely driven by ambitious regional independents.”

The sale includes The Three Fishes in Mitton, The Highwayman at Kirkby Lonsdale, The Clog & Billycock in Pleasington and The Bull at Broughton, which join Brunning & Price’s 62-strong pub portfolio. The Nag’s Head pub in Cheshire was not included in the sale, despite being put on the market by Northcote for around £1m earlier this year.

The 150-cover site opened in 2014 after a £1m refurbishment and received a positive review from Jay Rayner in TheObserver, but appears to have closed this year after it stopped serving food. Ribble Valley Inns was founded in 2004 by Northcote, which also owns the Michelin-starred Lancashire restaurant and hotel of the same name.

“This has been an opportunity for us to build a kitchen to give free reign to all of the ambitions that we both share, which have been slightly limited by the circumstances we work in in Vauxhall, and to conceive and develop a project from absolute scratch,” said Boxer, speaking to The Caterer.
